Guma Energy
Strategic partners European , Chinese and other South Africans.
Guma has in 2007 identified the energy sector as a growth opportunity. GUMEDE realized that initially South Africa, which has had massive economic growth over the years was soon to suffer power shortages .
Further ESKOM , the State owned then monopoly which was involved in power generation , transmission and distribution had not made the continued investment required . Eskom was producing over 40 000MW largely from Thermal coal . These coalfired power plants have not been maintained and most were reaching the end of life .
ESKOM has in the past, during Apartheid, focused in providing electricity to fellow white compatriots residences and their businesses, to the exclusion of Blacks . When Nelson Mandela became the first democratic President , the ANC government's priority was to electrify Black households/communities and bring clean and drinkable water to the masses of our people .
At Guma , we knew that soon the government and ESKOM will require more power generation plants as well as embark on massive maintainence .
We also identified the lack of electricity or generation of electricity in the African continent , hence it is called the DARK CONTINENT ( not because of the pigment of Africans skin but because Europe and the desert based Middle East light the skies every night !! ) .
The lack of electricity in the mining, Oil and Gas rich African countries denied them economic growth or sustainable job creation . The minerals became stagnant below the ground whilst the few mining activities were undertaken at huge costs using diesel fuel to mine .
Guma Chairman predicted that Africa would begin to address its electricity supply challenges, especially with the economic growth propelled by China's thriving economy that requires minerals like iron ore, coal , oil , gold , copper Etc .
