Lioness attacks buffalo, creating traffic jam in South Africa
Published: 26 October 2009

A hungry lioness was photographed by a brave tourist as she attacked an enormous water buffalo in Kruger National Park in South Africa.

So intent was the big cat on getting her lunch that she chased her prey directly into the midst of a convoy of cars carrying tourists through the park.

One snapper, “Mgdonny”, posted the series of action shots on the photo sharing website Flickr.

The lucky photographer wrote: “We sat there for about an hour and nothing happened. The buffalo then tried to lift itself up, with great difficulty, and after some time managed to get on its feet.

“As it stood up this female lioness came walking towards it and jumped on to the buffalo’s back trying to pull it down.

“The female lioness was injured in the back leg and looked as if it had tried to attack the buffalo previously and was injured in the process.

“The buffalo started snorting and walking with the lioness on its back trying to escape.”

“It came towards the roads and hit a car in the rear bumper and the lioness couldn’t hold on and jumped off.”

Then, the tourists on safari witnessed even more action, as the injured lioness was joined by two lions, though they remained on the periphery, as spectators.

The injured but persistent lioness managed two more attempts to bring down the enormous buffalo before giving up.
