Guma Tourism is a wholly owned and managed tourism investment company, founded by self made entrepreneur Robert Gumede.
Guma Tourism continuously seeks to expand its tourism operations into Southern Africa. In August 2008, Guma Tourism, as the leader of a consortium of investors including Old Mutual, the Independent Development Corporation and members of the management team, successfully bid for the acquisition of public-listed Tourvest Investment Corporation Limited.
This R2bn deal hails the dawning of a black-controlled power house providing a wide range of business and leisure travel services to the tourism industry.
Guma Tourism now owns 51.3% of the business of Tourvest, Old Mutual Life Assurance Company, through its private equity investment business OMIGSA Private Equity - 30%, the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited - 13%, with the remaining shares held by members of the management team.
Until the aforesaid Tourvest transaction, transformation and development in the tourism industry had lagged behind other sectors in South Africa. As there were no significant black competitive players in the tourism industry before the acquisition, this deal provided an ideal opportunity for entrepreneurial blacks to enter the relevant industry and participate on an equal footing with their competitive counterparts and add value to the industry.
As a result of the 51.3% shareholding held by Guma Tourism, a wholly black-owned and managed company, Tourvest is classified as a black company.
