About Guma Smart Card

Guma Smart Card, wholly owned by Guma, specialises in smart card manufacturing for public telephones with an 'integrated chip module', global mobile systems (GMS), and loyalty and banking markets.

As a result of Guma's share holding, Guma Smart Card is the only 100% black-owned and managed smart card manufacturer in Africa.

Guma Smart Card was established in 2000 by the Executive Chairman, Mr. Robert Matana Gumede. Initially, Guma invested a hard-earned R30million in ACT, a company owned and managed by British citizen, Dr John Sterenborg. Guma bought out Sterenborgs shares in ACT but within a month Brait Merchant Bank, a creditor, instituted liquidation proceedings as Sterenborg had not disclosed the fact that ACT owed Brait R17million, the amount of which it had failed to service for a long period of time. In spite of Guma and Gumede spending millions to defend the action, ACT was eventually liquidated due to the undisclosed debt and fraud committed during Sterenborg's reign. Guma and Gumede instituted legal action against Dr Sterenborg claiming R52m as per the profit warranties given. Guma and Gumede were successfully awarded more than R40m by the Johannesburg Supreme Court. For more info on ACT see www.gumasmart.co.za
